Hutson’s Autoflora is a series of sculptural relief works. The exhibition was titled after Hutson noticed some cars in his neighbourhood were growing tiny plants and lichens. The title also refers to the surrealist technique of automatism – allowing the unconscious mind to drive the creative process. In this case, Hutson is thinking about the play between weeds and urban spaces, and letting these relationships inform the visual choices made as the works evolve. The patterns, colours and textures in these sculptures are borrowed from his encounters on the bike path, which runs behind a series of industrial areas, and past rivulets and roadside reserves. Although Hutson’s actual ‘floral’ motifs are quite sparse, each artwork circles back to this intersection between the natural and industrial. emerged from artist Andy Hutson riding his bike along a disused rail line in nipaluna / Hobart. He noticed the opportunistic growth of plants along the path and their attachment to disturbed soil in a remnant industrial setting. The flexible and opportunistic status of introduced species became a metaphor. Hutson explains that weeds “get in the way and shift the course from an original intent,” in parallel to the way an artwork can come together from an idea but with an unexpected outcome. “Almost every time along the path there would be some other things that I would notice. It’s still that same process where I have this idea and all these distractions keep shifting my attention. I have a pocket notebook. What you end up with is something quite different from what was anticipated from the outset.” The artist has a background in sculpture and jewellery making and completed a residency over 2020-2021 at Contemporary Art Tasmania. With an understanding of soldering and braising, this knowledge creeps into the pieces through the handmade brass attachments and the use of sanders and other tools to model the material. The works have pictorial elements, particularly in their connection to the variable qualities of the weeds encountered, their colours and forms. But in being almost-paintings they are also almost-objects, suggesting shelves, mirrors, hinged doors or framing devices. Each work reaches for a satisfying sense of containment and a structural integrity. The sphere, the ring, ropes under tension and diamond shapes that suggest cyclone fencing – forms repeat and vary in size, scale and definition. The marine rope offers a further link to the specifics of place, namely the nipaluna / Hobart harbour. Fennel seeds are embedded in encaustic. Mallow flowers have been collected from the path, dried and pressed into the surface under wax, before being scraped back to a flat, resilient finish. In another work a bowl is cut and burnt with a heat gun to form a symbolic Oxeye daisy, a common weed in the district. A Hole in the Fence uses plywood and found timbers including King Billy, an endemic Tasmanian conifer. The wood has been arranged as variable rings on handmade brass hooks and the work feels like an assortment of material origins brought together to propose a harmony. On the hooks hang loops of the various timbers, carved, painted and suspended like a collection of keys that describe negative space. Nosy Neighbour uses Huon Pine, King Billy and Tasmanian oak. Timbers are arranged as a cosmology of white spheres on a black surface. The specifics of material are important with pencil, wax and acrylic binders applied to both push and engage with specialised timber surfaces. Andy Hutson is thinking about weedy problems and the complexity of states and materials. Plants are wonderful and advantageous but can be a problem in the wrong context. Then there is the problem of making art, of finding the right language. How should things hang or sit as an agglomeration? Hutson describes “trying to find ways to manifest an awareness of place and history associated with plants and land in general, in a practice that is pictorial and visual without being overt.” In his first exhibition at The Egg &amp; Dart, Andy Hutson works with these tensions to find a contemplative and precarious balance. partially describes the method of tying of a reef knot – the simplest way to join two ends of rope. A reef knot can be used to join one piece of rope into a continuous loop, or to combine two pieces and create a longer rope. There’s a pleasurable symmetry to this knot, hence its popular use in nautical imagery, however it easily becomes unstable if pulled on one end, or if different thicknesses of rope are used. Drawing on the tension manifested as rope turns to knot, right over left over is an informal conversation between objects; between energy held fast and latent possibility. It was collated using words primarliy from the news cycle of 2020. Visitors were given a tennis ball which they threw into a spinning machine, which then spat the balls out into the system of moving words and phrases. The premise was that you could watch your ball as it travelled through the machines, and whichever path it took would determine a unique set of words for you. In reality, it was so chaotic and dysfunctional that it was impossible to keep track of your ball amongst the many that were whizzing, falling, bouncing, rolling and bumping through the network. It worked properly about half the time it was running. This work was exhibited as part of No Place Like Home, curated by Emma Pike. Also featured were Tony Albert, Zanny Begg, Rachel Maclean, Nell, Ryan Presley, Phebe Scmidt &amp; Guitar Wars. May&nbsp; 2019 Soft Fascination is a term used in psychology that describes the restorative powers of passive enjoyment of nature; whereby the emotional depletion from stress, mental fatigue or overstimulation is reversed through quiet observation of ‘clouds moving across the sky, leaves rustling in a breeze or water...bubbling in a stream.' For most people, their experience of nature is often mediated in some way by technology. This has caused a historical shift in the way we look at landscape – not only has nature been commodified, but social media platforms such as Instagram are used as a substitute for real, physical experiences. But our thirst for nature can also be damaging: once remote or little-known sites of natural wonder are now becoming popular photography spots, and unique ecosystems are being trodden and destroyed as increasing numbers of visitors seek out the perfect shot, with accompanying geotag and hashtags - #nature, #waterfall, #sunset, etc. Inspired in part by the 19C Tasmanian Arts and Crafts movement, and drawing upon a myriad of sources – from bushcraft and survival manuals, preppers and paleo-lifestylers to outdoor-gear brands, extreme sports and DIY instructional videos, the works in Soft Work&nbsp;is in some ways about the one-liner, it’s also about multiple lines intersecting: my partner’s Macedonian grandmother (Baba) once told me that I have ‘lovely hands’. This was the closest I’ve ever come to having my palms read, but it still felt like a quasi-mystical experience. With her bony, arthritic hands, she clutched my fingers like a gypsy studying the subtle differences between the lines that will lead to inevitable sadness or true love, and I immediately felt a cosmic connection with the village of her childhood, and its’ superstitions, age-old goat’s milk remedies and the little scattered crumbs of ancient black magic. For the past few months or so I have been poking around in the studio working on a number of ideas that are in some way about hands. I believe the first time this idea occurred to me was when I was making maquettes for a project that never progressed beyond the research/development phase: this was about trying to get inside the head of a European explorer who was cataloguing the flora and fauna of north west Victoria during the 1880s, whilst also documenting the last remnants of indigenous culture that existed there. I wanted to make a photograph of a pair of paper-mâché hands sketching a bird, taken from the perspective of those hands’ owner. A pair of disembodied hands, working. &nbsp;A fragment of a second-hand experience, but a pair of hands that you could ultimately relate to. So in some senses, this is about the connection between the work and the hands, and - what exactly is the work that’s being done? I’m not talking about the hand-made, a term which inevitably leads to a tedious and irrelevant discussion of craft vs. art. (The two are just different ends of the same tangled piece of string.) This is about the hand as the tool – however clumsy - and how, from this perspective, the hands appear somewhat detached from the body. And the bodily detachment of hands is further enforced by the (now widespread) compulsive use of mobile devices – the hands have become an extension of a mind that is omnipresent, in communion with ephemeral beings and ideas. Digital fortune-tellers all, fingertips sliding over the smooth glass that sits within the palm, conjuring up all the hidden secrets of the world. I have always found myself drawn to the murky realm that lies between human culture and the natural world. Not only have we taken great pains to distance ourselves from our organic origins, but our technologies and ways of working have so entirely shaped the world we now occupy that the two appear almost indiscernible. The exhibition was based on the premise of conterfactual thought - the psychological concept that describes the human tendency to create possible alternatives to life events that have already occurred; something contrary to what actually happened.
